We are thrilled to announce that Jojo has been named the winner of the 2024 Dorothy Simmons Creative Writing Prize! This prestigious award was created to honor the late Dorothy Simmons, a passionate educator, advocate for public education, and published writer. The prize celebrates the power of writing and literature, just as Dorothy intended.
In an extraordinary display of generosity, Jojo has chosen to donate a portion of her prize to the Burnet Institute to support their crucial work in improving the health of mothers and babies in Papua New Guinea. This donation will help provide a stronger start to life for many families, making a real difference in their lives.
Jojo’s connection to the Burnet Institute began during the lockdown when Dr. Linda Reiling shared an informative video about the Institute’s incredible work. Inspired by the video, Jojo has been dedicated to supporting their mission ever since.
Earlier this year, Jojo had the chance to visit the Burnet Institute’s labs in Melbourne, where she observed the different stages of malaria under a microscope and learned about the cutting-edge tools used in medical research. This hands-on experience deepened her passion for science and strengthened her ambition to pursue a career in medical research—perhaps even at the Burnet Institute one day.
Jojo’s thoughtfulness and dedication to making the world a better place are truly inspiring. We couldn’t be more proud of her accomplishments. Congratulations again, Jojo, and thank you for your inspiring example!
