As the 2024 Boys Vice-Captain of Albury High School, Connor Lyons has not only demonstrated leadership but also a passion for improving school life for his fellow students. With a strong ambition to pursue a career in the legal and political fields, Connor is now preparing for the next chapter of his journey—starting university in 2025, where he will be studying a Bachelor of Laws and a Bachelor of Arts in Politics and Journalism at Notre Damn in Sydney.
"My decision to study this degree stems from my ambition to build a career in the legal and political spheres," Connor shared. "I’ve always been interested in how law and politics intersect and impact people’s lives, and this course will help me develop the skills and knowledge I need for that future." His time at Albury High has been marked by significant leadership opportunities, particularly through his involvement in the Student Representative Council (SRC) and the Prefects. "The most enjoyable part of being in these groups was undoubtedly seeing our hard work come to fruition and making a tangible difference in the school," Connor said, reflecting on the rewarding experiences he gained while helping shape school life.
During his senior years, Connor made sure to strike a balance between his studies and extracurricular activities. “The work in Year 11 and 12 was intense, but when I planned my time properly, it became manageable," he explained. "I still managed to work 12-16 hours a week at Chemist Warehouse and Earth to Life Eco Store, which taught me time management and prioritisation—skills that will serve me well in the future.” His commitment to school life extended beyond academics, with Connor also getting involved in community service. A standout experience was his participation in selling legacy badges in downtown Albury, a project that stemmed from Albury High’s strong ties with the Legacy Association. "It was a great way to serve the community and build essential skills like communication and teamwork," he said, noting that these skills will be valuable in any career.
Connor’s transition from Jindera Public School to Albury High was a significant change, with a much larger student body to navigate. "At AHS, I learned to interact with people from all walks of life, and this has made me feel more confident as I prepare to step into university, where the environment will be even bigger and more unfamiliar," Connor shared. "The supportive, diverse nature of AHS helped me build the confidence to engage with new spaces and people, and I’m ready for what comes next."
Reflecting on his most memorable experience at Albury High, Connor points to his involvement in the Year 12 trivia event. "It was such a great opportunity to collaborate with other members of the SRC and create something that everyone could enjoy. Seeing the whole school come together for a fun, memorable event was definitely a highlight of my time at AHS."
As Connor sets his sights on university and beyond, there’s no doubt that the leadership, communication, and teamwork skills he honed during his time at Albury High will play a pivotal role in his success. The future is bright for this aspiring legal and political leader, and we can’t wait to see all that he accomplishes.
