WHY ALBURY HIGH?: Yousef Elhage reflects on his time at AHS

Albury High School graduate Yousef Elhage has much to celebrate after his outstanding performance in the 2024 HSC, achieving a Band 6 result in Design & Technology. His commitment to excellence didn’t stop there, as he also tackled a demanding academic load, including Mathematics Advanced and Extension, Advanced English, Physics, and Engineering Studies. Yousef’s impressive achievements have paved the way for exciting opportunities, though 2025 is shaping up to be a year of tough decisions.

Currently weighing offers from both Monash University (Bachelor of Engineering) and Melbourne University (Bachelor of Science – Nuclear Powered Submarine Pathway), Yousef admits he’s in a dilemma. "2025 is still quite uncertain for me," he shared. "It’s a hard choice between two incredible pathways, and I’m grateful to have these opportunities ahead."

Aside from his academic accomplishments, Yousef was an active and enthusiastic member of the Albury High School community. One of his most cherished memories was his time on the AHS soccer team, where he fondly recalls the camaraderie and lighter moments, such as laughing with teammates about a match where he might have given away two penalties. “The long bus rides to games in other towns were a great chance to bond with people outside of my grade and friend group,” he said.

Yousef’s passion for design and teamwork also came through in his innovative Design & Technology project. Originally conceived as a much-needed, comfortable replacement for an old bench at St. Pat’s FC, Yousef and his team expanded the idea to create a modern, functional soccer bench. With the help of the Industrial Arts department, they were able to build and donate the new bench to the local soccer club, complementing St. Pat’s new, state-of-the-art fields.

His leadership skills were also honed through a prefect role, but it was his time as a Year 10 mentor for Year 6 students that stands out. “It was a unique opportunity to guide the younger students, helping them find their way around high school—especially where to find the best bubblers and the canteen specials,” Yousef joked, crediting his fellow mentor, Rhys, for the expertise in those important areas.

Looking back on his time at Albury High, Yousef has no regrets. "I’ve never looked back on my decision to come here after primary school. The endless opportunities, fantastic teachers, and the life lessons I’ve learned have shaped me into who I am today," he reflected. "I’m grateful for the memories and friendships that I’ll carry with me for years to come."

As Yousef stands at the crossroads of his future, one thing is certain: whatever path he chooses, his time at Albury High has prepared him for success. We wish Yousef all the best as he embarks on this next exciting chapter of his journey.
