AHS Celebrates 2023 Sporting Achievements

Albury High School proudly recognizes the remarkable sporting achievements of its students in 2023, with multiple awards highlighting the talent and dedication of athletes across various disciplines.

The three major honors presented were Sportspeople of the YearNSW Combined High Schools (NSWCHS) Sporting Blue, and Riverina School Sports Association Awards and Blues.

The prestigious Sportspeople of the Year awards were presented to Pheonix Gothard and Mia Lavis. Pheonix, a standout in Australian Rules football, capped off his high school career by being drafted by the GWS Giants with Pick 12 in the 2023 AFL Draft. His dedication to the sport and outstanding performances throughout the year earned him this well-deserved recognition. Mia Lavis, another exceptional athlete, represented Australia in netball at the Youth Commonwealth Games, showcasing her skills on the international stage and making her school proud.

A major highlight of 2023 was Samuel Webb receiving the NSWCHS Sporting Blue for basketball, a prestigious honor awarded at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Sam was one of only 63 students from across New South Wales government schools to receive this accolade, recognizing his high-level performance and dedication to the sport.

The Riverina School Sports Association Awards and Blues also celebrated Albury High’s sporting stars, with numerous students excelling at regional and state levels. Sam Webb (basketball), Jade Crook (basketball), Blake Morgan (cross country), and Mikayla Talbot (athletics) all received Riverina Blues, acknowledging their outstanding contributions. In addition, Ashleigh Carty (athletics), Isabelle Rae (swimming), Charlie Murphy (water polo), and Josh Gould (water polo) were honored with Merit Blues, recognizing their exceptional performances while representing Riverina and NSWCHS.

An exceptional achievement came from Sienna Toohey, who received the Honour Blue for swimming and was also awarded the Lorraine Wright Shield for her outstanding attributes and contributions to Riverina sports. Sienna became the sixth Albury High student to receive this distinguished award, joining a legacy of excellence at the school.

These accomplishments reflect Albury High School’s strong tradition of sporting excellence and the students’ dedication, talent, and sportsmanship. Congratulations to all the athletes for their outstanding achievements in 2023
