History

Founded in 1920, Albury High School has grown from humble beginnings into a leading public secondary school in southern New South Wales. Originally located in the old Albury Hospital on Thurgoona Street, the school opened with over 200 students under the leadership of founding Headmaster Mr. J.G. Monaghan. Despite limited facilities, the school quickly developed a strong sense of pride, identity, and academic ambition—values that remain central to its culture today.

The school crest, motto (Ad Astra per Aspera  – “To the stars through difficulties”), and colours (red and black) were established in the first year and continue to represent the school’s enduring spirit. In 1928, the school moved into its iconic Kiewa Street building, which marked a significant step forward in the quality of education offered to the local region.

Over the decades, Albury High School has adapted to meet the needs of a growing and changing community. From surviving the challenges of the Great Depression and two World Wars to embracing educational reforms like the Wyndham Scheme in the 1960s, the school has remained at the forefront of public education.

The 1950s and 60s saw the construction of vital facilities, including the Memorial Oval, gymnasium, specialist learning blocks, and the Girls’ and Boys’ Hostels, which supported students from rural and remote areas. More recently, Albury High has continued to evolve with modern upgrades, including new learning spaces, technology integration, and specialist programs in agriculture, arts, and vocational education.

As it enters its second century on its current site (1926–2026), Albury High School proudly reflects on a legacy of academic, sporting, and community excellence, shaped by the dedication of its students, staff, and families over the past 100 years.

School Song & War Cry

School Song (by R.C. Wilkinson)
War Cry
(1)
Its days may not be manifold;
Its students may be few;
But we have often shown the rest
What Albury can do.
We've shown it in the summer days
The willow meets the ball;
We've shown it on the football field
At the best High School of all.
Oompah, Oompah,
Yacki, Yacki, Oompah,
Bluemella, Bluemella, Yah, Yah, Yah;
Ego yah, ego yah,
Anargi, Popargi, Urananagi,
Albury High School, yah, yah, yah;
Pom-tita pom, pom-tita pom,
Hullah, hullah, umpah, hah,
Albury High School, yah, yah, yah.
Chorus
So sing until the rafters ring,
And ring again the call;
For it's your school and it's my school
And the best High School of all.
(2)
We'll show it in the classroom, too
When French comes round again;
And Mathematics makes us grind
And groan with mental pain.
We'll stick the torturing periods out,
And very seldom fail,
When once again exams arrive,
At the best High School of all.
(3)
The day will come when we shall leave
Its doors to come no more;
But we shall often live again
The days we spent of yore.
The days that seemed so tedious then
But now can never pall.
The days of work, the days of play
At the best High School of all.
