Albury High School Graduate Jacob Horn Takes on the U.S. with Soccer and Studies
Jacob Horn, a 2023 Albury High School graduate, embarked on an exciting journey at Bushnell University in Eugene, Oregon, where he is combining his passion for soccer with his pursuit of a business degree.
Jacob’s path to the U.S. began in Year 10 when he discovered the opportunity for Australian students to play high-level sport while earning a degree. Signing with Southern Cross Athletes, Jacob worked hard on his academic performance, culminating in a Band 6 in Mathematics during his HSC. His commitment to both his studies and soccer helped secure him academic scholarships, opening doors to further opportunities.
Since arriving in the U.S., Jacob has immersed himself in new experiences. In the past eight months, he’s enjoyed skiing, rock climbing, attending Oregon Ducks American Football games, and bonding with his teammates through orientation events and team activities. He’s even had the chance to travel across five states—Oregon, Washington, Idaho, California, and Montana—competing in soccer matches and exploring the outdoors.
One of the highlights of his time at Bushnell has been the cultural diversity within his soccer team. With players from 13 different nationalities, including Australia, Mexico, Venezuela, and Brazil, Jacob has had the opportunity to learn from various cultures, enriching his experience both on and off the field. Having another Australian teammate, Will Habberfield, who also graduated from Albury High School, has made the transition easier for Jacob.
Pre-season training was intense, with twice-daily sessions and team meals, quickly followed by the start of the season. Despite their hard work and a historic positive record—marking the first time in school history that the team finished with more wins than losses—Jacob’s team narrowly missed out on conference finals.
Jacob’s first season has been developmental, playing in 11 out of 18 games and starting in one. He looks forward to building on this experience in the upcoming months, with the hope of returning stronger for the next fall season.
Academically, Jacob has thrived, finishing his last semester with A+ grades in all of his classes, despite mostly taking general education courses. His focus is on business, and he is excited for the specific courses to come.
Will Habberfield, his fellow Albury High graduate, is also studying at Bushnell, pursuing a degree in psychology. Though Will is in his third year of university, it’s his first year at Bushnell, joining Jacob in navigating this new chapter.
Jacob’s journey is a testament to his hard work and determination, as he balances his athletic career with his studies while embracing the opportunities and challenges of university life in the U.S.
