Cleared for Takeoff: Carl Lyons’ Journey from Albury High School to the Skies

Class of 2024 graduate Carl Lyons has always aimed high — and now he's soaring even higher as he trains to become a commercial pilot through the prestigious Sydney Flight College (SFC) in Tamworth. A former school prefect, accomplished pianist, and representative swimmer, Carl is once again proving that hard work, discipline, and passion can open incredible opportunities.

Carl’s aviation journey began while still a student at Albury High School, where he achieved his Private Pilot’s License — a rare and impressive feat for someone of school age. His love of flying and his commitment to building a career in aviation led him to apply for SFC’s highly competitive Double Diploma Course, combining a Commercial Pilot's License (CPL) and Instrument Rating. This 12-month accelerated program is offered at SFC’s Tamworth campus, known for its intensive training schedule and outstanding facilities.

In December 2024, Carl travelled to Bankstown Aerodrome for two days of rigorous selection testing. On Day 1, he sat a Mathematics and Coordination test — scoring 100% in Mathematics, a result described by the SFC Training Manager as extremely rare. Even more impressive, Carl achieved the highest coordination test score in the college's history, showcasing exceptional skill in joystick and rudder control, multitasking, and precision.

Day 2 involved a practical flight assessment. With his prior flight experience, Carl impressed instructors with his composure, technical knowledge, and aircraft handling during a scenic and skills-based flight around Sydney’s airspace. Following a final interview, he was accepted into the Tamworth program — and was recognised as one of the few “accelerated” students due to his prior training and youth. Carl is believed to be one of the youngest members of his intake.

The Tamworth campus offers a dynamic environment: 27-square-metre private rooms with ensuite bathrooms, a pool, gym, tennis and basketball courts, and a football field. Students engage in a full-time schedule, including three days of theory and three days of practical flight training each week, supported by self-study requirements.

By April 2025, just three months into the course, Carl had already completed two of the seven required CPL theory exams — Meteorology and Performance — and was preparing to sit his third, Navigation, placing him a remarkable six weeks ahead of the next closest student.

Carl’s achievements reflect his exceptional work ethic and drive — qualities nurtured and supported during his time at Albury High School. He credits the school community for helping him develop discipline and confidence across academics, leadership, and co-curricular activities.

From music and sport to the cockpit of a commercial aircraft, Carl Lyons is a shining example of the limitless potential of Albury High School graduates. We look forward to following his continued success as he takes his next steps towards a professional career in aviation.
